On Safer internet day we watched clips 'Lee and Kim' and 'Red and Murphy'. It taught us all about how to stay safe online, how to safely use technology and who to go to when we feel worried or upset about something whilst using technology.

To begin with we became familiar with the keys on the keyboard on a laptop such as letters, numbers, caps lock, apostrophe, full stop and space bar. We then played the dancemat keyboard game online which helped us recognise where to place our fingers to be able to touch type. We started off on level 1 which introduced the home row keys; f d s a j k l ; g and h. Then, we applied the skills we learnt from the dancemat keyboard game to be able to type sentences on Microsoft Word. We wrote sentences from our current text in English - The Queen's hat. First we used the Bee-Bot iPad app to practice giving instructions by tapping the arrows on the screen. Then, we gave the real Bee-Bot instructions of how to get from one place to another. We explored instructing the Bee-Bot to go forwards, backwards, left and right by pressing a series of buttons in the correct order. We then had a go at giving our peers instructions for the Bee-Bot using instruction cards. We watched video clips about cyber-bullying and the effect it can have on people. We discussed the issue in our Year One classes. After this, we came up with some ideas that we could use as slogans to get the message across that any form of bullying is not acceptable. We then designed our own t-shirts with the different slogans on. For the majority of Year One, this was the first time using a laptop - which was very exciting! First we looked at turning a laptop on and off. Then we learnt how to use a mouse as it is very different to tapping the screen on our iPad's/tablets. We explored moving the cursor and left clicking by playing dot to dot games which required us to move the cursor to a specific dot and ensuring it was in the center before left clicking. We then looked at clicking and dragging the cursor. To begin with we found this concept rather tricky, but we all got the hang of it eventually!

We sang along to the 'Funny Tummy song' which helped us understand that we may get a funny feeling in our tummy if we see something we don't like whilst using technology, and if we do we must tell a trusted adult straight away. We also discussed how to identify an adult that we can trust: someone you can talk to about anything without feeling worried. We recorded 5 trusted adults that we feel we can go to on a 'Help Hand'. Finally we helped the e-safety fairy by suggesting top tips on how to stay safe when using technology. These included:
We looked at a free app called Scratch Jr to learn all about basic coding and programming. We started by making our own characters and backgrounds before giving them simple instructions to follow. We then learnt how to make them move, grow, shrink, appear and finally disappear! We learn how to create a sequence for our new characters to follow and then showed them to our friends!
We revisited how to be safe online by watching some videos about our personal information. We watched all about Hector and his friends and discussed some of the mistakes he and his friends had made. We then went away and wrote some posters to remind us about what we had learnt. We remembered the importance of not giving out our personal information and the need to check with our grown ups if we are ever stuck or unsure!
We spent today looking at how to record and show information about our favourite fruits. First we asked our friends about their favourite fruit: grapes, apples, oranges, strawberries and bananas. Next we made a tally chart and then a pictograph to find our the most and least popular. We used our results to then make our own pictographs to show our results! We used a QR code to access an online pictograph as well which we used to create our own electronic pictographs!
1TJ loved grapes! 1AL loved apples! 1LW loved strawberries! We looked at how to use Doodle Buddy to create our own pieces of art. We chose to draw things from our favourite English books. Can you spot our Bog Baby, Lonely Beast and our pictures of Big Ben? We picked some of our art work and used screen mirror to show our pieces of Art to everyone in the class!
