This term foundation 2 invited parents to join the children in an ICT workshop. This gave F2 parents the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the types of educational games and apps that the children access daily while in school. F2 teachers shared personalised logs ins with families so that the children can access these applications and games whilst at home. Parents were able to ask questions and raise any concerns with F2 staff regarding ICT, appropriate games/apps and e-safety.
Both children and parents enjoyed spending time interacting with technology together. During storm Ciara the children in foundation 1 enjoyed watching videos about how the weather had impacted on our local area. The children explored how we can use the internet to retrieve information about the weather forecasts on local news sites. The children showed a huge interest in watching videos of flooding and the big waves in New Brighton.
EYFS Links: UTW Technology 30-50M • Knows that information can be retrieved from computers Foundation 1 enjoy exploring different types of every day technology in our home role play area. We have enhanced our role play areas to include a wide range of technology- some that are familiar and others that the children may have not seen before.
The children have enjoyed using the rotary dial telephone and film camera within their play and this exposure to older technology has allowed the children to make comparisons and have discussions surrounding the different types of technology we use on an every day basis. When exploring the film camera the children noticed that there is no screen to see the pictures they have taken this lead into a discussion about having to wait for pictures to developed and printed. The children also compared the phones they have at home to the rotary dial phone in the role play area- the children explored how to dial numbers and discussed the difference between a mobile phone and a land line. EYFS Links: UTW Technology 30-50m • Shows an interest in technological toys with knobs or pulleys, or real objects such as cameras or mobile phones. In foundation 1 the children have enjoyed using YouTube to search for songs that the children would like to dance to. This has been an excellent opportunity to discuss internet safety when using YouTube. The children discussed the importance of waiting for the teacher to approve songs before putting them on the interactive whiteboard, always having an adult present when they are using YouTube so that content is monitored, never clicking on a new video before checking with an adult first and always gaining permission before accessing this website.
EYFS E-Safety rules:
EYFS Links: Expressive arts and design: Exploring and using media and materials 30-50M • Enjoys joining in with dancing and ring games. • Sings a few familiar songs. • Beginning to move rhythmically. • Imitates movement in response to music. The children in foundation 1 have been exploring interactive Christmas toys. The children have been exploring how to turn the toys on and operate the volume. The children discovered that some of the parts used magnets to make the toys move. Foundation 1 staff observed the children and talked about the ICT apparatus, what it does, what they can do with it and how the children can use it safely
EYFS LINKS: UTW Technology 22-36M • Seeks to acquire basic skills in turning on and operating some ICT equipment. 30-50M • Knows how to operate simple equipment e.g. turns on CD player and uses remote control. • Shows an interest in technological toys with knobs or pulleys, or real objects such as cameras or mobile phones. • Shows skill in making toys work by pressing parts or lifting flaps to achieve effects such as sound, movements or new images. Foundation 1 have been playing with wind up toys. The children use cause and effect toys as part of understand the world and technology. The boys used the toys to race each other and work on their fine motor skills.
EYFS Links: UTW Technology 30-50m • Shows an interest in technological toys with knobs or pulleys, or real objects such as cameras or mobile phones. • Shows skill in making toys work by pressing parts or lifting flaps to achieve effects such as sound, movements or new images. Foundation 1 have been using remote controlled cat robots during continuous provision. The children have been using their ICT knowledge to navigate the cats around the rooms. The children have used the robots to develop an understanding of action, reaction and directional language.
EYFS LINKS: UTW TECHNOLOGY 22-36M • Seeks to acquire basic skills in turning on and operating some ICT equipment. • Operates mechanical toys, e.g. turns the knob on a wind-up toy or pulls back on a friction car. 30-50M • Knows how to operate simple equipment, e.g. turns on CD player and uses remote control. • Shows an interest in technological toys with knobs or pulleys, or real objects such as cameras or mobile phones. • Shows skill in making toys work by pressing parts or lifting flaps to achieve effects such as sound, movements or new images. The children in foundation 1 have been using the interactive whiteboard to listen to our favourite songs. The children love choosing songs to listen and dance to and this is a brilliant opportunity to discuss internet safety- we talk about having an adult present when using sites like YouTube, we talk about what we can do if something pops up when we are watching videos and how we must never click on a video without asking an adult.
EYFS Links to E Safety sticky knowledge:
Learning about festivals and celebrations using technology:Children in foundation 1 have been learning about different types of festivals and celebrations. Teachers have enhanced the continuous provision to include different activities that include the use of information technology.
The children had the chance to create their own firework art in many different ways when learning about bonfire night. The children could use the interactive whiteboard to create their own firework pictures. The children were able to explore different colours and styles of painting as well a being able to use an age appropriate computer program. The children's work was then printed and put into their individual learning journeys. The children also enjoyed watching firework displays from all over the world on videos found on the internet. During Diwali the children were able to extend their knowledge of Mehndi patterns by creating their own designs using the interactive whiteboard. The children also enjoyed investigating battery operated tealights when learning about the festival of light. On Remembrance day the children enjoyed watching videos of the Royal family using live stream during the minutes silence. The children then used the interactive whiteboard to design their own Poppies. IpadsUsing Ipads- This term the children have loved using our school Ipads in continuous provision. We have been learning how to use the apps to play games and how to use the camera to capture videos and pictures. In foundation 1 we have been talking about what apps and games we use at home and what to do if we are unsure about how to use an app or game. Foundation 1 have been talking about the importance of asking an adult for help and being aware of how much time we spend on our Ipads. Foundation 1 have been using sand timers to set time limits when using our Ipads so that we can practice good sharing and turn taking as well as being aware that we need to monitor our screen time. We have loved using our Ipads to play counting and phonics games on apps like Busy Things and Cbeebies! EYFS Links: UTW technology: 40-60m • Completes a simple program on a computer. • Uses ICT hardware to interact with age-appropriate computer software. Interactive WhiteboardUsing our interactive whiteboard- Across the foundation stage children have had access to our interactive whiteboards. This term the children in foundation 1 have loved using YouTube (supervised by a teacher) to search for videos about things they are interested in. When learning the nursery rhyme "1,2,3,4,5 once I caught a fish alive" many of the children expressed an interest in learning more about different types of fish and sea creatures. The children then used YouTube to search for information videos and loved watching videos of whales on the board. As part of our E-safety lessons we also used this opportunity to talk about the importance of asking an adult before using apps and websites such as YouTube to watch videos, especially at home on our own devices. Using the board to play interactive games on Busy Things has also been a favourite activity for the children- we have loved creating art work, practising counting, playing with shapes and working on our letter formation using the touch screen board.
