Foundation 2 took part in parent workshops focusing on technology within the early years. The children loved showing their parents all of the brilliant educational apps and games we use in school. Parents and teachers were able to discuss the benefits of using technology to enhance learning as well as talking about the importance of limiting and monitoring tablet time at home. Children across foundation 1 and 2 now also have log in details for the "Busythings" website meaning children can access personalised educational content and online homework challenges at home!

Early Learning Goal for technology in EYFS Children recognise that a range of technology is used in places such as homes and schools. They select and use technology for particular purposes. In foundation 1's home corner and role play areas we allow the children to play with and explore technology that they will encounter in everyday life. The children love using moblie phones, remote controls, computers, Ipads, digital cameras etc. By using these role play props we are able to provide an opportunity for the children to use ICT-related resources in a real and practical way, helping them to understand that ICT is part of everyday life! In foundation 2 we use miniature speakers to record messages that give instructions for tasks! Here is an Easter themed challenge with Miss Pinningtons instructions recorded onto the speaker. We press play, we listen to the task and then we get to work! This is a great way to include technology into other areas of learning. EYFS Links:
Communication and Language: Listening and attention 30-50m • Is able to follow directions UTW: Technology 22-36m • Seeks to acquire basic skills in turning on and operating some ICT equipment. 30-50m . Knows how to operate simple equipment, e.g. turns on CD player and uses remote control. In foundation 1 parents use the class DoJo app to send pictures of what the children have been up to while the children were off school for Easter. The children love looking at different pictures of themselves and telling us all about their time off school. When children achieve something new at home or visit a new and exciting place parents will send messages and pictures to their teachers and then the children can share their news with the whole class. We also use DoJo to celebrate achievements and good behavior in school by giving out personalised DoJo points every day. We love class DoJo! EYFS Links:
Personal, Social and Emotional Development: Self-confidence and self-awareness 30-50m -Confident to talk to other children when playing, and will communicate freely about own home and community. Communication and Language: Listening and attention 30-50m • Listens to others one to one or in small groups, when conversation interests them. Communication and Language: Speaking 30-50m • Uses talk to connect ideas, explain what is happening and anticipate what might happen next, recall and relive past experiences. Foundation 2 have been using the Bee Bots to learn about directions, sequencing, estimation and problem-solving during continuous provision times. Directional keys are used to enter commands which send Bee-Bot forward, back, left, and right. The children loved creating obstacle courses for the robot to complete and enjoyed working as a team to get the Bee Bot to its destination. EYFS Links
Maths: Shape, space and measure 40-60m • Orders and sequences familiar events. • Uses familiar objects and common shapes to create and recreate patterns and build models. UTW: Technology 40-60m • Completes a simple program on a computer. • Uses ICT hardware to interact with age-appropriate computer software. EAD: Exploring and using media and materials 40-60m • Manipulates materials to achieve a planned effect. • Constructs with a purpose in mind, using a variety of resources. Across foundation stage we use our Ipads daily to facilitate learning across each area of the EYFS outcomes. In foundation 1 we have our designated Ipad station which allows children to access educational apps and games during continuous provision time. The children love exploring the Cbeebies app and interacting with games that include their favourite characters. Children in foundation 1 can also use the Ipads to listen to stories using Disney's digital books. Problem solving games encourage discussion and perseverance on the Busythings app as well as allowing the children to practice sharing and turn taking. In foundation 2 the children enjoy taking the Ipads outdoors to take pictures during seasonal walks- the children can then share their pictures with their friends on the large interactive whiteboard screen- allowing opportunities for children to use their observational skills and engage in interesting discussions with peers. Phonics and maths games are always a popular choice on the Ipads- this gives the children a chance to put their skills and knowledge into practice independently. Children in foundation 2 are using the Ipads to start to learn the basics of coding using Daisy the Dinosaur app. The children love exploring objects, sequencing, loops and events by solving this app's challenges. We love using our Ipads! Foundation 2 have been learning about staying safe online with the help of Smartie the penguin! After reading the story about Smartie and his new tablet F2 have been discussing the importance of asking an adult for help when they unsure what to do about pop ups that may appear on their favourite interactive games. Foundation 2 even made their own E-safety posters to promote being smart and safe when using your tablets! EYFS links:
UTW: Technology 40-60m • Uses ICT hardware to interact with age-appropriate computer software. LITERACY: Reading 30-50m • Listens to and joins in with stories and poems, one-to-one and also in small groups. • Joins in with repeated refrains and anticipates key events and phrases in rhymes and stories. LITERACY: Writing 40-60m • Attempts to write short sentences in meaningful contexts. Within the early years foundation stage ICT is not always restricted to the use of computers, laptops and tablets- ICT comes in a number of different forms. In foundation 1 during circle time we use "cause and effect" toys to promote curiosity, turn taking and basic technology skills. We are learning how our actions e.g. pressing a button can cause a reaction. We love exploring wind up toys, light spinners, remote control operated toys etc. to explore technology within our classroom! Understanding the world: technology
22-36m • Seeks to acquire basic skills in turning on and operating some ICT equipment. • Operates mechanical toys, e.g. turns the knob on a wind-up toy or pulls back on a friction car. 50-50m • Shows an interest in technological toys with knobs or pulleys, or real objects such as cameras or mobile phones. • Shows skill in making toys work by pressing parts or lifting flaps to achieve effects such as sound, movements or new images. Foundation 1 have been using the interactive whiteboard to access phonics games that help with letter formation, letter recognition and sound discrimination.
"Bug Club" is used by foundation stage to introduce new letters and sounds each day in the form of short simplistic videos. "Bug Club" also allows children to practise blending and segmenting the new sounds they introduce which is an important part of early reading. Children in foundation 1 are able to practice their letter formation using both the interactive whiteboard and Ipads which allows also allows them to strengthen their fine and gross motor skills. Children are also able to develop their pencil control and grip through the use of the interactive whiteboard pens. For children who are not yet ready for phase 2 letters and sounds the "busythings" website also offers phase 1 listening and sound games which concentrate on developing children's listening skills thereby laying the foundations for the phonic work which starts in phase 2. The children love using technology to showcase their phonics skills and the games are simple and engaging! The following areas of the EYFS framework are being met by using technology in our phonics sessions: Communication and Language: Listening and attention 22-36m • Shows interest in play with sounds, songs and rhymes 30-50m • Focusing attention – still listen or do, but can shift own attention. • Is able to follow directions (if not intently focused on own choice of activity). Physical development: Moving and Handling 22-36m • Beginning to use three fingers (tripod grip) to hold writing tools • Imitates drawing simple shapes such as circles and lines. • May be beginning to show preference for dominant hand. 30-50m • Draws lines and circles using gross motor movements. • Holds pencil between thumb and two fingers, no longer using whole-hand grasp. • Holds pencil near point between first two fingers and thumb and uses it with good control. • Can copy some letters, e.g. letters from their name. 40-60m Shows a preference for a dominant hand. • Begins to use anticlockwise movement and retrace vertical lines. • Begins to form recognisable letters. • Uses a pencil and holds it effectively to form recognisable letters, most of which are correctly formed. Literacy: Reading 30-50m • Shows interest in illustrations and print in books and print in the environment. 40-60m • Hears and says the initial sound in words. • Can segment the sounds in simple words and blend them together and knows which letters represent some of them. • Links sounds to letters, naming and sounding the letters of the alphabet. • Begins to read words and simple sentences. |
